Learn to Curl Events
The Belfast Curling Club offers Learn to Curl events prior to each half of its season, in late October, then again in early January. These two-hour sessions give participants a brief overview of how the game is played, on-ice instruction in the basics of stone delivery and sweeping, then the chance to jump in a game (with further guidance and coaching). Learn to Curls are a great way to get a taste of this highly social, FUN, and unique indoor winter sport.
For those who wind up desiring more than a taste, and who are interested in joining weekly league play, Learn to Curls are scheduled so that you may become a member in time to attend a skills clinic and sign up for leagues.
What to expect: Curling is a blast! Unravelling the mysteries of the sport’s mental and physical aspects, the sound of a stone traveling down the ice, the camaraderie inherent in the sport—ALL are addicting! The physical act of throwing a stone is unlike anything you’ve probably ever done before, so sometimes muscles that haven’t been used in a while are awakened. Adaptive equipment is available for those with mobility challenges. Participants must sign a BCC Release of Liability form (in the case of children, by their parent/guardian).
What to wear: Wear loose comfortable clothing, dress in layers, and have gloves and a hat available (you’re in an icehouse...but depending how much you need to sweep, you can work up a sweat!) Bring a pair of clean-soled sneakers OTHER than what you wear to the event. Sand, salt, or other debris will damage the ice and impair stone delivery.
The cost for a Learn to Curl is $40 per person; should you become a member following the event, that $40 will be deducted from your membership dues. Pre-payment is necessary to reserve a spot. Space is limited! Please send a check made out to Belfast Curling Club to Steve McLaughlin, 32 Lovejoy Pond Rd, Wayne, ME 04284
For more information or to sign up, contact Steve McLaughlin at [email protected] or call 207-685-9540. Provide your name, email address, phone number and desired session date and time.
Specific dates and times for October 2023 and January 2024 sessions will be posted here over the summer.
