YOU Can Curls

YOU Can Curl sessions are essentially ice rentals for groups of up to eight participants. For $360, we will supply eight of you with two instructors and a sheet of ice for a three-hour curling experience. We start in the warm room, providing an overview of the game, move to the ice for a crash course on stone delivery and sweeping, and then, guided, you do all the curling in a two-hour game. An instructor remains at each end of the sheet, providing tips on strategy and how to make the called shot. When the game is over, take advantage of our warm room and bar for the curling tradition of broomstacking, where opponents sit down together for post-game conversation and beverages (winners buy the first round), or watch the next group master the sport.

Typically, the Belfast Curling Club reserves four or five Saturdays for YOU Can Curl opportunities during its November through March season. Sessions may be in the morning, afternoon or evening. Specific dates and times are determined by late September. This opportunity is “first-come, first-served” and these go fast. If you would like to be added to our email notification list, contact Douglas Coffin at [email protected]. A deposit is required to reserve a spot. Should you need to cancel, it is refundable IF we can re-rent your ice time.

Sessions other than those advertised are a possibility. Weekday sessions are available outside the times scheduled for BCC league play and ice maintenance. Larger groups may rent all three sheets of ice, accommodating 24 curlers at a time, plus others spectating/waiting to play. We do offer our bar and kitchen as part of a larger or corporate rental. Community specials are available for youth and nonprofits, and rates are negotiated based on duration. The recommended minimum age is 12.

What to expect: Curling is a blast! Unravelling the mysteries of the sport’s mental and physical aspects, the sound of a stone traveling down the ice, the camaraderie inherent in the sport—ALL are addicting! The physical act of throwing a stone is unlike anything you’ve probably ever done before, so sometimes muscles that haven’t been used in a while are awakened. Adaptive equipment is available for those with mobility challenges. Participants must sign a BCC Release of Liability form (in the case of children, by their parent/guardian).

What to wear: Wear loose comfortable clothing, dress in layers, and have gloves and a hat available (you’re in an icehouse...but depending how much you need to sweep, you can work up a sweat!) Bring a pair of clean-soled sneakers OTHER than what you wear to the event. Sand, salt, or other debris will damage the ice and impair stone movement.
